Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
